In 2002, Stefan Milota, Laurentiu Sarcina and Adrian Balgar have discovered during a cave exploration (Pestera cu Oase), a human mandibule (Oase 1) which was dated later to be some 35 000 years old. This makes it the oldest modern human fossile from Europe. More exploration of the karstik system was done between 2002-2004. In 2004 and 2005, for a month, an international team met at Anina, trying to find answers to some questions regarding the human remains that were found inside the cave (Pestera cu Oase)
